A federated data mesh for cross-border and cross-sector health surveillance across the African Union.
The Digital One Health Platform (DOHP) is the African Union’s continental data-sharing infrastructure for human, animal, and environmental health. Built on SpeedyMesh, DOHP enables AU member states to securely exchange surveillance data, coordinate cross-border responses, and operationalize the One Health approach. The platform brings together ministries of health, agriculture, and environment in a shared, federated ecosystem designed to support pandemic preparedness, antimicrobial resistance tracking, and early warning systems.
Health surveillance systems in Africa are often fragmented by sector, language, and legacy infrastructure. Ministries collect valuable data—but in isolation—making it difficult to detect outbreaks, align response strategies, or share critical insights across borders. Regional and continental coordination was hindered by inconsistent standards, lack of trust, and absence of secure, shared data platforms.
Speedykom developed DOHP as a modular, standards-based data mesh architecture. Each country maintains sovereignty over its own node, while sharing governed data products through federated agreements. The platform includes:
“Working with Speedykom was a breakthrough. Their team helped us integrate complex systems across borders, on time and on budget. They truly understand the challenges of development projects and how to solve them with technology.” — Dr Kirstin Free, Program Manager, GIZ
